One of the most important skills to learn when you’re driving a houseboat is how to dock the boat. Even experienced captains can find it challenging at times, especially on windy days. That’s why docking is a big part of our on-the-water training for all crews; we want to make sure our guests feel prepared before heading out on their adventure. When we’re coaching our houseboat guests through the process of docking, there are 3 key pointers we always share to make docking easier.
One of the biggest mistakes novice boaters (& sometimes experienced boaters) make is going too fast when they’re entering the locks or docking the boat. We coach our guests to shift into neutral as you approach the dock and if the wind is in your favour, let the boat drift in, rather than giving it more throttle as you’re approaching. If you’ve misjudged and come in too fast, we recommend shifting into reverse and giving the boat a quick shot of gas, which will slow you down, then you can shift back to neutral.
Then, from neutral, you can gauge how the wind and current are affecting the boat and use the bow and stern thrusters to make small adjustments to the boat’s position. It’s normal to feel a little nervous when docking, especially the first few times, but if you move slowly and deliberately it’s easier to stay calm throughout the process.
Securing either the bow or the stern gives the captain and crew the confidence of knowing they are safely connected to the dock. Quick tip: we always suggest securing the bow first, except if the wind is coming from behind – in that case, it will be easier to secure the stern first.
From there, you can use a combination of thrusters, shift and throttle to maneuver the boat parallel to the dock and finish tying up. For example, if your pivot point is at the bow, one crew member will loop the bow line around a cleat and hold the boat close to the dock. Then, the captain will put the boat in reverse with the motors turned in the direction they want the boat to go (ie. towards the dock), and slowly bring the back of the boat in.
Docking is a team effort and the process goes much more smoothly when everyone’s on the same page. Before our guests head out on their adventure, we help them assign roles and talk through the process ahead of time, so the whole crew knows the plan. Normally, you have three people working together to dock the boat: one handling the bow line, one at the stern, and the captain at the helm, steering the boat. The captain cannot see both ends of the boat, so it’s important to call out instructions and confirm when lines are secure.
Docking is a skill that improves with practice. By slowing down, securing a pivot point, and communicating clearly with your crew, you make the process smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.
