Is it hard to drive a houseboat?
We know the idea of operating a 40-foot boat can seem intimidating at first, especially if you’re new to boating, haven’t been on the water in years, or have only driven smaller powerboats in the past.

Although many houseboat rental companies do not have this requirement, it’s important to us that all guests captaining our boats have obtained their license. To get your boating license, you need to take a boat safety test that’s been approved by Transport Canada, which typically comes at the end of a boat safety course. By taking a boat safety course, you will be prepared for your houseboat vacation with an understanding of navigation rules, emergency procedures, navigation aids, and other critical aspects of safe boating.

Before you embark on your journey, every crew participates in a comprehensive, hands-on training session with our team.

We walk you through everything step-by-step on the water, giving you a chance to practice.
As part of your on-the-water training, we stay onboard as you navigate the boat through the first lock on your journey (Lock 2 – Sidney). We’re there to offer pointers & answer any questions you may have, helping you feel as comfortable as possible doing it on your own.
Remember, it’s not about being perfect at the helm – it’s about feeling safe, trusting your instincts, and working as a team with your crew.
These thrusters are small, motorized propellers that let you shift the front and back of the boat from side to side, making it easier to adjust your position when entering a lock or docking.
Most rental boats don’t have them, and guests often tell us this feature alone makes them feel far more at ease captaining the boat!
